The Alabama NAACP along with other plaintiffs announce its New D2 Plaintiff’s Tour. On Saturday, June 15, 2024, the Alabama NAACP is partnering with the Greater Birmingham Ministries, and other organizations, as well as the Plaintiff’s involved in the United States Supreme Court’s Federal case, Allen v. Milligan. We will travel to the counties in District 2 to rally and encourage voters to turn out to vote in the upcoming November election.
The Federal Courts ordered Alabama to redraw district lines creating the new District 2, consisting of Mobile, Washington, Clark, Barbour, Bullock, Butler, Conecuh, Monroe, Pike, Macon, Russell and portions of Montgomery County, allowing for voters to elect a second Congressperson to serve from Alabama.
There will be a rally in each county except where the counties combine. “We are excited to have this opportunity to fellowship with community, as well as educate and motivate the voters to go to the polls in large numbers this November. We’re serious about voter participation. We don’t want anyone to sit this one out, instead, we want everyone to go to the polls and cast their vote,” said Benard Simelton, President of the Alabama NAACP.
“A high turnout among Black voters from every age group in Congressional District 2 would not only benefit Alabama, but the nation as a whole. Alabama would benefit by having an additional voice in Congress representing the issues people really care about, education, health care, transportation, the environment, jobs and job training. The nation would benefit by having a stronger voice overcoming the forces of hate and division. If we want representation, we’ve got to “represent” come the elections” said Scott Douglas, Executive Director of Greater Birmingham Ministries.
“I’m really looking forward to connecting with our neighbors living throughout Alabama congressional district 2. I have been honored to serve alongside my co-plaintiffs on the litigation that helped secure the redesign of this district. Due to those advocacy efforts, residents of CD2 have an important opportunity to elect a candidate committed to investing in communities that have long been overlooked. We’ll be working to spread that message throughout the summer and fall and encouraging audiences to join us in expressing our commitment to freedom and democracy by voting this November,” said Evan Milligan.
District 2, joins with the 7th Congressional District, allowing for a second black opportunity district. The D2 Tour will start at 10 a.m. and culminate at 3 p.m. in Montgomery, ultimately segueing into a weekend of events as we celebrate the Juneteenth holiday.
