(Mobile, AL — November 1, 2016) – Executive Committee members of the Mobile County NAACP express their general dissatisfaction and disappointment with today’s revelation that a Mobile County grand jury decided not to pursue criminal charges against MPD Officer Harold Hurst in the June 13 shooting death of Michael Moore.
A number of questions remain about the case, particularly the disposition of the weapon, witness testimony and other facts that we believe warranted further examination in a court of law. What legal precedents were applied to these facts?
Without knowing what evidence was presented to the 17-member grand jury, we are operating in a vacuum. Therefore, we cannot have complete satisfaction with the process or total confidence in the grand jury members’ collective decision.
The only thing we know for sure is that a 19-year-old citizen was killed by Officer Hurst and that a gun was later found on his body at the hospital where he was taken for treatment. Many other circumstances and questions around Michael Moore’s death remain unanswered.
Therefore, we are expanding our investigation into this shooting along with our state and national presidents to make sure that all the facts surrounding this incident are thoroughly presented, discussed and determined in order to assure the community that justice under the law has truly been served.
