Journey for Justice Kicks Off on Voting Rights 50th Anniversary

The Mobile County Branch #5044 of the NAACP asks you to join a national campaign starting in Selma, Alabama, to restore voting rights and to advance a policy agenda to protect the rights of all American citizens.

From August 1 to September 16, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is spearheading “America’s Journey for Justice” –an historic 860-mile march from Selma, Alabama, to Washington, D.C. The march will mobilize activists from around the country and advance a focused national advocacy agenda that protects the right of every American to a fair criminal justice system, uncorrupted and unfettered access to the ballot box, sustainable jobs with a living wage, and equitable public education.

“We’ll be marching for justice and equality in your area this summer and we need you with us to make the largest impact possible,” says Cornell Williams Brooks, President & CEO of the NAACP. “We’re embarking on this journey to show the entire nation that our lives, our votes, our jobs, and our schools matter.”

An emerging coalition of labor, civil rights, environmental justice, democracy reform advocates, industry, and faith-based communities will join the NAACP in amplifying this advocacy theme. Ensuring equal representation at the polls helps to make certain that our communities also have sustainable jobs, environmental justice, criminal justice, equitable education and voting rights.
“If we want to force lawmakers to stop dragging their feet on the issues that matter to us, we need to come together,” Brooks says. “Our ability to gather in large numbers, attract the attention of the media, and make our voices heard in the streets will bring us to victory.”

The Mobile County Branch NAACP and its members ask citizens from Mobile to join on us in this march.

Thousands will march through Alabama and rally for economic equality on August 3 in Montgomery. RSVP to join your fellow civil rights activists in this fight. RSVP here, and we will contact you with more information for getting involved with #JusticeSummer.

Whether you are able to march with us all the way across the state, or if you’d simply like to join us for one rally, your participation in this Journey is critical. Members from the Mobile Branch are slated to go to Selma on August 3. Local marchers wishing to attend may send an email to MobileALNAACP@gmail.com.
