What– Truth & Justice Tuesday Town Hall / Mass Meeting to Discuss Ways to Prevent Deadly Encounters with Law Enforcement Officials

Why– The alarming pattern of unarmed people — particularly men of color — being killed at the hands of police continues unabated in communities around the country in 2015, despite numerous protests and demonstrations in 2014 demanding accountability from those sworn to serve and protect the public.
The Mobile County Branch NAACP #5044 continues to hear about patterns of alleged discrimination in housing, voting rights violations, incarceration, property rights, etc., here in Mobile using its Legal Redress Committee process. Until criminal justice reform is completely won, the Redress Committee feels it is imperative to lead our upcoming mass meeting teaching citizens how to prevent deadly encounters with law enforcement in our community.
“We are mindful of the stressful relationship between minority community members and the law enforcement community,’ says Richmond Henderson, a co-chair of the Redress Committee. “The committee advises the community members of ways to deal with the police and their rights as citizens.”
The Mobile NAACP continues to call on our political and judicial leaders to:
1.\ Create new laws that ensure such extrajudicial killings are investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law;
2.\ Make new rules that provide better training in community policing; and
3.\ Institute other reforms that change police culture and practice in a wholesale fight against racial profiling and police brutality.
We also call on our fellow citizens to recognize the humanity of their neighbors — regardless of race, color, creed, nationality or sexual orientation — and to stand up for the civil rights of everyone living in our city, our state and our nation.
