Who– The Mobile County Branch NAACP, Save OurSelves (SOS) Movement for Justice & Democracy and Community Leaders
What– “Walk to Justice: Unity in the Community”
When– Saturday, Dec. 20th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Why– To hold nonviolent protests of recent decisions in the deaths of unarmed men of color at the hands of police because justice denied to any citizen diminishes the rights of all citizens. The recent spate of police killing of unarmed people has become an alarming pattern that we must address immediately to prevent similar incidents from happening to people in our community.
We call on our judicial and political leaders to:
1.\ Create new laws that ensure such extrajudicial killings are investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law;
2.\ Make new rules that provide better training in community policing; and
3.\ Institute other reforms that change police culture and practice in a wholesale fight against racial profiling and police brutality.
We also call on our fellow citizens to recognize the humanity of their neighbors — regardless of race, color, creed, nationality or sexual orientation — and to stand up for the civil rights of everyone living in our nation.
How– A Nonviolent Rally at Lyons Park and A Peaceful March to Government Plaza in downtown Mobile. The Mobile Branch of the NAACP is coordinating with other groups to call on all members of our local community who are tired of the killings — whether perpetrated by police or by any other citizen — to join us in a unified “Walk to Justice.”
