The Mobile County Branch #5044 of the NAACP is hosting Gospel Explosion 2014 at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 20, at Friendship Baptist Church, 545 Cody Rd North.
Gospel Explosion 2014 features several well-known area choirs including Men of Praise from Toulminville-Warren Street United Methodist Church, Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church Choir and the Mobile Metropolitan Mass Choir featuring Steffon McCovery.
The event is a fundraiser for the Mobile Branch of the NAACP, whose mission is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights for all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.
The event also and signals the local branch’s new direction in the community.
“While our mission and vision for justice remain the same since the NAACP’s founding in 1909, we are renewing our commitment on a local level to improve the lives of Mobile citizens so that, no matter what zip code they live in, they can reach their full human potential,” says Mobile Branch NAACP President Ronald Ali.
“There are still deep pockets of poverty, unequal education, lack of economic opportunities and discrimination based on race and socio-economic standing. These conditions threaten to dim the hope for a better future for too many people in our county. That means the Mobile Branch of the NAACP still has work to do. So we are forming new plans and new partnerships to address these conditions, and we’ll be ready to announce the specifics soon,” he says.
President Ali says the Mobile Branch of the NAACP will reach out to the community through Gospel Explosion 2014 and other events in the next few months to start a dialogue and ensure that its plans meet the people’s needs.
